Description of 5G Technology
The 5th generation in mobile technology started emerging at the end of 2019. In a world of increasing technology, especially systems driven by IoT technology, 5G provides connectivity that is superior and more reliable than its predecessors. The innovations of mobile network technology doesn’t belong to a sole individual or a single organization. Instead, companies that benefit from mobile networks invest and partner to make specifications and requirements for the emerging technologies.
The most prevalent would be the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an industry organization that defines the specifications for mobile networks starting from the 3G release (5G Wireless Technology 2020). The members of the 5G partners within 3GPP “range from infrastructure vendors and component/device manufacturers to mobile network operators and vertical service providers” (5G Wireless Technology, 2020). Partners in 3GPP create a flow of information that results in key inventions on the 5G design from air interface to the service layer of the network.
Although 5G is built on the foundations set from its predecessors, 5G has vital differences that sets it apart from all other generations. 5G is created with the mindset of empowering all emerging technologies and existing industries across many fields. Some of the key features include high speeds, superior reliability, and lower latency (5G Wireless Technology 2020). This will enable industries from the healthcare to agriculture to become more efficient. To put its data transfer rates to perspectives, CNET stated that a two-hour movie can be downloaded in 8.2seconds, nearly 20 times faster than the 4G predecessor (Samsung U.S. Newsroom, 2020).
5G will also be used across many platforms. From a broader perspective, 5G network will be used in “enhanced mobile broadband, mission-critical communications, and the massive IoT” 5G will build on the 4G LTE capacity of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and create faster, lower latency and lower cost-per-bit support. 5G will also impact the medical field through mission-critical communication servers that allow mobile control of major infrastructures to allow certain medical procedures to be operated remotely. Through advancements in technology and the rise of IoT, 5G will enable the connectivity of sensors that are capable to connect with incredible reliability and power.
Although most consumers won’t see the benefit of 5G network until 2022+, this technological advancement in mobile network will inspire growth and innovation in other industries. The partners in 3GPP created the specifications of 5G network to support not only existing industries and technology, but to allow flexibility in supporting inventions still to come with ease and reliability. Mobile network is no longer going to be used to describe the speed in which we surf the web or are able to watch YouTube with little to no buffering; after 5G is adopted by major carriers and industries, mobile networks will be used to describe the features of automated vehicles and hospital care features (5G Wireless Technology, 2020).
